The 2015 Winter Universiade is the 27th Winter Universiade and the first one in history that was held in two countries: Slovakia (Strbske Pleso and Osrblie) and Spain (Granada and Sierra Nevada). Spain won the bid, but in 2013 FISU took the decision to hold skiing disciplines in Slovakia. At these Games Team Russia won in total team count, having set a record: 20 gold, 18 silver and 18 bronze medals. Team South Korea won the second place (5-9-2) and Team Kazakhstan is third (5-6-0).
The first Summer Universiade was organized by Italian Association of University Sports. 985 athletes from 45 countries of the world took part in it. The competition programme included seven kinds of sports.
I Winter Universiade took place in Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, in France, from February 28 to March 6, 1960. Athletes from 16 countries of the world took part in it. The competition programme included five kinds of sports.
Summer Universiade 1961 was the second Summer Universiade that took place in Sophia (Bulgaria) from August 25 to September 3, 1961. It took place in the universal Vasil Levski stadium. 1270 participants (899 men and 371 women) joined the Universiade.
Winter Universiade 1962 was the second Winter Universiade; it was held in the highland resort Villar-sur-Ollon in canton Vaud in Switzerland, from 6 to 12 March 1962.
Summer Universiade 1963 was the III Summer Universiade held in Porto-Alegre (Brazil) from August 30 to September 8 1963, at the stadium Olympico Monumental. 713 athletes from 27 countries of the world took part in the competitions. The Universiade was the first international competition that took place in South America.
Winter Universiade 1964 was the III Winter Universiade that took place in winter resort Špindleruv Mlýn located in the mountain range of Krkonoše, in the territory of modern Czech Republic, from February 11 to 18, 1964.
Summer Universiade 1965 is the IV Summer Universiade that took place in Budapest (Hungary) from August 20 to 30, 1965. 1729 athletes from 32 countries took part in the Universiade.
Winter Universiade 1966 was the IV winter Universiade that took place in the winter resort of Sestriere from February 5 to 13, 1966.
Summer Universiade 1967 was the V Summer Universiade that took place in Tokyo (Japan) from August 27 to September 4, 1967.
Winter Universiade 1968 was the V Winter Universiade that took place in the Austrian town of Innsbruck from January 21 to 28, 1968.
Winter Universiade 1970 was the VI Winter Universiade that took place in Finish city Rovaniemi from April 3 to 9 of the year 1970.
Summer Universiade 1970 was the VI Summer Universiade that took place in Turin (Italy) from August 26 to September 6, 1970.
Winter Universiade 1972 was the VII Winter Universiade. It took place in Lake Placid (USA) from February 26 to March 5, 1972. It was the first Universiade held beyond the boundaries of Europe.
Summer Universiade 1973 was the VII Summer Universiade, which took place in Moscow, USSR, from August 15 to 25, 1973. The programme included competitions on ten kinds of sports; over 4000 athletes took part in the event. The main site of the Universiade was the Lenin Central Stadium.
Winter Universiade 1975 was the VIII Winter Universiade that took place in Italian Alpine city of Livigno, Sondrio province, from April 6 to 13, 1975.
Summer Universiade 1975 was the VIII Summer Universiade that took place in Rome (Italy) from September 18 to 21, at the Roman Olympic stadium. VIII Summer Universiade was carried out in the form of all-university world track-and-field championship. However, 468 athletes from 38 countries of the world took part in the event.
Summer Universiade 1977 was the IX Summer Universiade that took place in Sophia (Bulgaria) from August 17 to 28, 1997, at Vasil Levski stadium. 2 939 athletes from 78 countries of the world took part in the competition. Before that, Bulgaria had hosted the II Summer Universiade in the year 1961.
Winter Universiade 1978 was the IX Winter Universiade that took place in Czechoslovakian resort Špindleruv Mlýn located in the territory of Krkonoše mountain range from February 5 to 12, 1978.
Summer Universiade 1979 was the X Summer Universiade. It took place in Mexico City (Mexico) from September 2 to 13, 1979. 2974 athletes from 94 countries of the world took part in the competition (which was a doubtless record of the Universiade).
Summer Universiade 1981 was the XI Summer Universiade that took place in Bucharest (Romania) from July 19 to 30, 1981. 2912 people from 86 countries took part in the competition. The main stages of the competition were held at Lia Manoliou Stadium in Bucharest. During 11 days the event was visited by nearly 200 000 spectators.

Summer Universiade 1983 was the XII Summer Universiade. It took place in Edmonton (Canada) from July 1 to 12, 1983. 2400 athletes from 73 countries took part in the competition. The competition programme included ten kinds of sports.

Winter Universiade 1985 was the XII Winter Universiade. It took place in the Italian city of Belluno in 1985.
Summer Universiade 1985 was the XIII Summer Universiade that took place in Kobe (Japan) from August 24 to September 4, 1985. 2 783 athletes from 106 countries of the world took part in the event.
Winter Universiade 1987 was the XIII Winter Universiade. It took place in Štrbské pleso (Czechoslovakia) in 1987.
Summer Universiade 1987 was the XIV Summer Universiade that took place in Croatian Zagreb (Yugoslavia) from July 8 to 19, 1987. 6423 athletes from 122 countries of the world took part in the event. The competition took place at Maksimir stadium.
XV Summer Universiade took place in Duisburg (the Federative Republic of Germany) from August 22 to 30, 1989. 1 785 athletes from 79 countries of the world took part in the event.
Winter Universiade 1989 was the XIV Winter Universiade. It took place in Sophia (Bulgaria), in the year 1989.
XVI Summer Universiade took place in Sheffield, Great Britain. The host country preferred calling it World Student Games. Sheffield City Council regarded this even to be a catalyst for city revival after a slowdown in industrial production. It created a special company called Universiade GD Ltd to work on the games’ infrastructure.

Winter Universiade 1995 was the XVII Winter Universiade. It took place in the Spanish city of Jaka from February 18 to 26, 1995.
Winter Universiade 1997 was the XVIII Winter Universiade. It took place in the South Korean county of Muju from January 24 to February 2, 1997. This Universiade was the most Southern located of all the Winter Universiades, including those planned up to the year 2017 (36°04' North).
Summer Universiade 1997 was the 19th Summer Universiade that took place in Italian island of Sicily from August 20 to 31, 1997. The tournament program included ten kinds of sports. The major part of the competitions took place in the cities of Catania, Palermo and Messina. Some football and basketball matches took place in more than ten other towns of Sicily.
Summer Universiade 1999 became the twentieth Summer Universiade. It took place in Palma (Spain) from July 3 to 13, 1999.

Winter Universiade 2009 was the XXIV Winter Universiade. It took place in Harbin (China) from February 19 to 28, 2009.
Summer Universiade 2009, official name: XXV Summer Universiade. Took place in Belgrade (Serbia) from June 30 to July 12, 2009. The other cities which pretended to host the Universiade were also Monterrey (Mexico) and Poznan (Poland).
XXV Winter Universiade took place in Erzurum city, Turkey, from January 27 to February 6, 2011. Two times in a row winter Universiade was held in Asia: in the year 2009 the Chinese city of Harbin hosted the event. Summer Universiade 2011 also took place in Asia, in the Chinese city of Shenzhen.
Summer Universiade of the year 2011, XXVI World Summer Universiade took place in Shenzhen, China, from August 12 to 23, 2011.
Winter Universiade 2013 (Ital. XXVI Universiade invernale) is the XXVI Winter Universiade, which will be held in the Italian province of Trentino from December 11 to 21, 2013.
XXVII World Summer Universiade is a World sport event of students and youth to be held in the year 2013. It is hosted by Kazan (Russia), the most Northern located city among all the capitals of summer Universiades. 350 sets of medals are to be handed during the Universiade; this is going to be a record.
Summer Universiade 2015 is the XXVIII World Summer Universiade to be held in Gwagju.
Winter Universiade 2017 is the 28th World Winter Universiade to be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Almaty has been officially announced to be the capital of the 28th Winter Universiade of the year 2017.
The 29 Summer Universiade 2017 will take place in Taipei in Taiwan (Chinese Republic). Brasilia (Brazil) and Izmit (Turkey) bid for the University Games as well. On November 29, 2011 at the scheduled FISU meeting Taipei was elected the host city. The city will hold the Universiade for the first time.
The University Games in Krasnoyarsk will take place from the 2nd to 12th of March 2019. The Universiade Program includes 8 compulsory sports (ice hockey, short track speed skating, figure skating, curling, Alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and biathlon). During the bidding stage the host city offered two optional sports (ski orienteering and freestyle skiing). About 3 000 athletes from all the continents are expected to come. The city is preparing to welcome over 10 000 guests. The Games in Krasnoyarsk will become the first winter ones in Russia.
